The Independence The Thalidomide Society's Newsletter
No.21 Spring 2005
Co-ordinator’s Report by Vivien Kerr
I am delighted that we are again preparing for another edition of the newsletter. This edition includes reports on the recent successful conference held in the Wirral. We were fortunate in having both Bert Massie, Chairman of the Disability Rights Commission and Eric Low, Chief Executive of the International Multiple Myeloma Foundation UK as keynote speakers. Their talks are reproduced in full in this issue. The painting session held as a workshop at the conference proved to be very successful and our grateful thanks go to Katrina Gardner and Daphne Allan for their sterling work in demonstrating mouth and foot painting and allowing their paints to be tried out by very enthusiastic amateurs. I think it is very likely that this workshop will return again next year.
The video for Brazil is progressing well thanks to the sterling work carried out by Geraldine Freeman, whom I know, has been driving the length and breadth of the country in search of potential 'celebrities' to appear in the film. We are currently checking the spiel for the voice over and hope to have completed the video in the next few months. Thanks are also due to Eddie Freeman who has kindly offered to edit the video into its final form.
Thanks are due to all those who responded to our member survey, which was carried out over the last few months. I am in the final process of analysing all the responses in readiness for the next meeting of the board of trustees. This survey developed out of a training session held in October of last year. The training session focused on the where the Society might be going in the next few years.
Further on in this issue you will find the statement which was agreed at the Japanese Conference in October last year, at which Darren Mansell , our Vice Chair, represented the Trustees of the Society. This statement has been sent to the relevant Government Departments as requested by the delegates at that conference.
